Frank Domains essential guide to domain names

A domain name is a vital part of your brand’s identity and should be treasured as a pride possession. Fail or forget to renew at your peril because it’s can become a very expensive and time-consuming mistake . It could be the difference from maintaining or losing your precious domain name.

So to make sure you don't lose out on your domain, here at Frank Domains we thought we’d pass on our vast industry knowledge giving you an essential guide to domain names.

1.      First things first, register your domain names for multiple years and if possible, set-up auto renewals. It sounds simple but you will be surprised how many people don’t realise that they have only signed up for 1 year ownership, with the misassumption, believing once registered it is owned for life. This certainly is not the case, although if kept ahead of renewals technically it can be, but owners must remember to renew or else it could be hijacked by another company once expired. Try to register your domain for 5-10 years, not only will this   decrease the chances of you forgetting to renew each year, it could also bring with it cost savings for ‘buying in bulk’.
2.      Following on from the point above, auto renewals are extremely handy as long as you are comfortable with domain registrars storing your credit details and managing the process for you. By giving the registrar permission to charge your credit card and renew the domain automatically on your behalf, this is your safest option to help prevent your domain from expiring, and subsequently in the worst case scenario, being bought by another company.
3.      Take reminders seriously! Domain registrars always send out multiple reminder  messages to keep you informed that your expiry date is looming, and quite often one click of a button could take away or the related stress which could come from not renewing.. Typically these renewal messages will firstly arrive 60 days prior to the expiry date with frequent reminders after.
4.      In the event that you unfortunately miss your renewal date and the grace period either side, you get one final chance to take ownership of your domain before it is made public. This however comes at a cost and you will need to pay a redemption fee of anything from £52 upwards. Think of it this way, domain names are like baseball (three strikes and you’re out!)
5.      Keep to one domain registrar. If you have multiple domains, be wise and keep them in once place; it will be.  a lot easier to manage and keep track of them this way Although typically we are told ‘don’t put all of your eggs in one basket, in terms of domains, in this case, DO!
Remember, if you are ever in need of advice please talk to Frank. Not only can we help with any domain queries, we can help advise how you can swap and store your domains in one place.

GCHQ battles against cyber espionage

According to the Gloucestershire echo, spies at GCHQ face an uphill battle against cybercrime. Reports suggest that the Cheltenham based listening post faces up to 70 cyber-attacks a month from foreign hackers.
Concerns first began when Director of GCHQ, Sir Iain Lobban made comments on the BBC regarding the subject, stating that the secrets were being exposed on an ‘industrial scale’ after being sanctioned by foreign powers. Sir Iain estimated that some firms had been penetrated for around two years, and denied any reports that the organisation had broken the law in receiving information from the prism spy program.

Problems seem to persist and in early February social media giants Twitter stated that as many as 250,000 users accounts, user names, email addresses and passwords may have been gained access to by hackers. The company said it took a week to discover the live attack, but then immediately shut it down, ensuring the safety of all its current users.

Despite all the efforts from GCHQ and the police, cybercrime is a very time consuming process and isn't easily be get under control. Cyber-attacks are seen as a consistent threat to both government and industrial companies. It’s thought to be far healthier to use high quality security software and to follow the careful safety steps online that can greatly reduce the likelihood of becoming one of the 7 in 10 global cybercrime victims last year.

Here at Frank Domains we are the first UK domain company to offer our customers with a preventative solution to cybercrime. Our new key fob system called “Domainsafe” offers an additional security when logging into our consumers domains.  It works in a similar fashion to online banking and uses the same security concept. All that is required is to just type in the one-time password when you log in. The key fob is just one of the preventable measures that companies can use to prevent acts of cybercrime on their company.

Despite the really frightening statistics on the scale of these attacks, cybercrime is still largely an avoidable crime. Most of these attacks are largely preventable by following good security practises and using updated security software. In our last blog post we discussed the “Top 5 tips for preventing cybercrime” and we hope that these tips and new measures can help put a stop to the on-going battle with cybercrime.

Top 5 tips for preventing cybercrime

Have you ever been attacked by cybercrime or in need of some dire help to fight cybercrime? Well if so you’ve come to the right place. Today Frank Domains has decided to fight back against cybercrime coming up with a list of the 5 top tips to help prevent cybercrime.
  1. Do the basics well; including knowing who has control of passwords and sensitive data, ensure passwords are frequently changed and if possible, use systems which allow Factor 2 security (keyfob device which generates a random number).
  2. Close vulnerable parts of your system; which usually means your web server. File transfer protocol (FTP) access should be strictly controlled, with only one account holder who is able to contact the server company. Also be aware of the options available and try to avoid cheap shared hosting package, a dedicated server is best.
  3. Keep your domain safe. This includes who has access from your business; as well as the company you choose to look after your domains. The UK’s biggest provider (123-reg) had a major disaster last year, when hackers found out by changing a single domain in the url of the browser, they then had access to other people’s web space.
  4. Use the latest version of mysql (a relational database management system) and php (Hypertext Preprocessor, scripting language) in all web systems.
  5. Be cautious of uploaded files; because any system which allows the public to upload a file is at risk. Files should never be uploaded to the same server as your live systems; they should be directed to an extra server away from your web structure, encase of hackers uploading malicious documents with threats. This covers everything from submission of CVs online, to uploading images when the public is involved.
The keypoint is your security is only as good as the weakest component; which sometimes it is out of your hands and control. If your hosting company accidentally gives your password to who they believe is the rightful owner asking for details; (this has happened to a multinational vendor) then there is not much you could have done.

So the most important aspect is to have a backup strategy in place; as cyber crime is an inevitable risk when you are actively working online. A backup strategy should include your data, your website in another location and your domain DNS (domain name system) in a backup location.

If in doubt speak with little Frank!

The force of Star Wars is back; LucasFilm registers new domains

It has recently been announced that Disney/LucasFilm are teaming up with Electronic Arts to develop a series of new Star Wars games over the next several years, with the earliest game release suspected for 2014. However, new domain registrations suggest that potentially there is far more than interactive games on the horizon; we here are eager to see ‘Order 67’ being released into a big-budget, action-packed blockbuster.

Expiring Domains: every company’s nightmare

This year, millions of people’s domains will expire. If they are well-informed enough to have a renewal agreement with whomever they registered with, they’ll be fine, but there will undoubtedly be some who will fall through the gap.

For companies who conduct most of their business online, forgetting to renew your registration can be disastrous. Not only does the website drop out, but so do your emails. This however, is only half the problem.

Our hopes for the future of Bitcoin

As long-term Bitcoin community members we have viewed the last few weeks with a mixture of trepidation and excitement. Having sold our products and services for BTC over the past year we have found that although there is a substantial amount of Bitcoin out there, there is still not a vibrant market in exchanging them for goods and services. In our humble opinion, if there was more trade in BTC, there would be a greater stability within the market. However, we have watched as frustratingly the majority of Bitcoin activity has been funneled into speculation and playing the market. This alongside the hoarding/saving that a lot of miners have engaged in, has lead to very little being spent on actual commodities. Now, however we hope that people will start to see that the currency is much better suited to its original purpose. Perhaps another cryptocurrency will emerge, which is innately better suited to speculation, but in the meantime, we hope that people will start to use their Bitcoins for more and more transactions.

Speculation over the next Xbox name

We are struggling to keep up... is it Xbox gold, Xbox 8 or Xbox infinity? Frankly it might not be any; but we are keen to see what Microsoft chooses and plays out following on from Sony promoting their latest console, Playstation 4.

We are tipping in the office that Microsoft might make a big announcement in April, and reveal their next project, potentially linking to a new Xbox console; seeing as they have recently secured all relevant domains.

This story is one to keep an eye on, and as enthusiastic gamers, we will be listening imminently; the question is what will be the new name if any?

RUMBLE OVER .AMAZON JUNGLE

One of the biggest domain disputes ever is taking place between online retailer giants Amazon.com inc and the South American government over the legal rights to the domain name .amazon. The Brazilian and Peruvian governments, whose combined rainforest equates to 73% of the world’s forests, have stated it “would prevent the use of this domain for purposes of public interest relating to the protection, promotion and awareness, raising on issues related to the Amazon biome”. Online retailers Amazon.com Inc. however, have already bid $185,000 for the domain name. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has issued an early warning to Amazon.com inc. asking their reasoning behind registering the domain. Amazon.com inc is yet to respond. The situation really shows how valuable domains are. Historically, domain names have always referred to a generic description such as .net or a geographical region such as .co.uk. All the new domain names have opened this up to be a lot more commercial. Who do you think should be given ownership of the domain?

.TRAVEL DOMAINS - Pro's and Con's

On the surface, .travel domains can appear too long, unwieldy and potentially unnessesary. Maybe for travel companies such as “Thomas Cook”, a .travel domain will actually look good and achieve its purpose (thomascook.travel). Not only does it inform the customer that this is a bona fide travel company, but it also doesn’t seem too awkward as a long domain name. However there are a lot of company names such as “Dash” (dash.travel), which can it look less like a domain and more like a funky name (DashDot Travel).

We have been brought up on the internet to trust and aspire towards short domains such as .com. Although 60% of people couldn’t tell you what com stands for (commercial), the likelihood is that they will hold a .com site in more esteem than any other. Long domains such as .travel almost seem to be in conflict with our deep-rooted preferences. This, coupled with the badly managed release of .travel domains has lead to a situation where 12 years after their release, there are still millions of .travel domains yet to be registered.

THE .XXX DOMAIN

Reports suggest the new .xxx domain has failed to arouse any interest! During a recent website scan by Metacert, it appears that 82% of adult sites are choosing to remain on the .com domain.

Many argue that the new top level domains are in fact beneficial, as they will allow consumers to be more aware of the site they are on whilst ensuring safety and stability of the domain name system. However certain pornography industry representatives disagree.

.TRAVEL DOMAINS – an inauspicious beginning

Due to widely held beliefs and speculative rumours, many web developers and domain registrars hold . travel domains in disregard. Without going into details, I will attempt to illuminate as to why the .travel domain release was such a flop.

BATMAN AND DOMAINS

Batman fans worldwide are jumping with excitement about the rumour that there may be a new Batman film or video game!

Where did this rumour originate? Interestingly, by registration of some domains!

Technology news website Fusible has noticed that overnight 15 Batman related domains have just appeared. Although the owner remains confidential due to the privacy laws, using a whois website, the domain registrar can be traced to the domain registration company Markmonitior. And as Warner brothers inc are a recognised client of Markmonitor, there’s a strong chance the domains were registered by Warner Brothers inc.

ONLINE TRAVEL INDUSTRY & ITS PITFALLS

Gone are the days when the sole source of travel information and services came from the high-street travel agent. The online travel industry has blossomed in the past decade, now supplying absolutely everything needed for a trip, except maybe for the actual experience itself. Nowadays if you happen to contract the travel itch, the first place you go for answers will invariably be the Internet.

Apart from adult websites (naughty.xxx) and spam sites, Travel has become the biggest online industry. In fact, completely contrary to popular predictions 10-20 years ago, worldwide interconnectivity has boosted travel rather than making it obsolete. This has meant that the way we think about travel has changed, or rather how we approach it.
